More About Us

We exist to be community asset. When we say A.S.S.E.T. we mean:

Advocacy - We are a pro 2nd amendment organization advocating for the inalienable right to armed self-defense for all Americans, specifically targeting African American and minority communities. We welcome people of all religious, social, and racial perspectives. We especially welcome active and retired African American members of law enforcement and the military.

Safety - Safety with firearms, as with any other potentially hazardous machines, comes through learning and practicing safe procedures until they become a habit. With proper knowledge, skill, and a respect for firearms, accidents will not occur. Firearms are dangerous only when people make them so. When handled improperly they can become instruments of danger to people and property; when handled correctly there is no danger. Obedience to the rules of safety and range commands makes target shooting a safe sport.

Self-Defense - You are your own first responder. Some situations may not have time to wait for law enforcement to arrive to ensure the public safety.

Education - Learning to operate a firearm starts with education. It is strongly recommended for anyone interested in owning a firearm first learn basic firearms safety, gun mechanisms, shooting techniques, and personal defense. Educations builds the foundation for training.

Training - It is important for anyone handling a firearm to receive proper training. Learning about a firearm, how it operates, how to use it and techniques leads to a safe more prepared and proficient individual. We make sure each of our students understand what it means to have, carry and operate a firearm. Our training courses are taught by high-skilled Law Enforcement Officers and Military Veterans providing a high-quality learning environment.

  • EDUCATE

Education is the means of studying in order to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of a subject that is to be applied to daily life. Through Education, the community can learn about firearms and firearm safety. In addition, education will serve to dispel rumors.

  • TRAIN

Through Training, members  build skills rooted in their knowledge and understanding enabling them to know when and how to properly use their firearm. Continued training improves performance, enhances skills, and build confidence.

  • EMPOWER

The combination of education and training gives individuals the power to make decisions, take action in te event of a self-defense situation. It fosters a sense of agency, responsibility, and ownership of the firearm and their lives. Empowers individuals to no longer fear the firearm but rather live with a healthy respect for its use for recreation and self-defense.

Fundamental Firearm Rules

1. Treat All Guns as Though They are Loaded - By treating every firearm as if it is loaded, a habit of safety is developed. Firearms should be loaded only when you are in the field or on the target range or shooting area, ready to shoot. Whenever you handle a firearm, or hand it to someone, always open the action immediately, and visually check the chamber, receiver and magazine to be certain they do not contain any ammunition. Always keep actions open when not in use. Never assume a gun is unloaded — check for yourself! This is considered a mark of an experienced gun handler!

2. Always Keep Firearm Pointed in a Safe direction - Never point your gun at anything you do not intend to shoot. This is particularly important when loading or unloading a firearm. In the event of an accidental discharge, no injury can occur as long as the muzzle is pointing in a safe direction. A safe direction means a direction in which a bullet cannot possibly strike anyone, taking into account possible ricochets and the fact that bullets can penetrate walls and ceilings. The safe direction may be “up” on some occasions or “down” on others, but never at anything not intended as a target. Even when “dry firing” with an unloaded gun, you should never point the gun at an unsafe target. Make it a habit to know exactly where the muzzle of your gun is pointing at all times, and be sure that you are in control of the direction the muzzle is pointing, even if you fall or stumble. This is your responsibility, and only you can control it.

3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger until You are Ready to Shoot - Never touch the trigger on a firearm until you actually intend to shoot. Keep your fingers away from the trigger while loading or unloading. Never pull the trigger on any firearm with the safety on the “safe” position or anywhere in between “safe” and “fire.” It is possible that the gun can fire at any time, or even later when you release the safety, without you ever touching the trigger again.

4. Always Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It - Don’t shoot unless you know exactly what your shot is going to strike. Be sure that your bullet will not injure anyone or anything beyond your target.

5. Never Attempt to catch a falling firearm - If a firearm is dropped, or falling, let it fall. Modern firearms have a drop safety that prevent it from firing. If you atempt to catch a falling firearm, you may mistakenly grab it by the trigger and discharge a round. This breaks rule 2 and 3.
